The two main types of Pilates exercise
The Pilates exercises may be divided into two categories: exercises on a floor mat (“matwork”) and exercises involving equipment . However, both categories were developed around the same basic principles and involve the same kinds of bodily movement.
Matwork or body control Pilates, requires only a floor mat to practice. These floor exercises are designed to utilize the body's own weight as resistance. Matwork intends to re-align and strengthen your body, with a lot of concentration on your core muscles. All the matwork exercises are done in a sitting or reclining position as explained by Joseph Pilates, "to take advantage of the more normal position of the visceral organs of the body when in such positions."
Equipment exercise involves the use of specially-designed machines fashioned after Joseph Pilates' original apparatus. Use of these machines normally involves signing up for classes, which are guided by a qualified instructor. You may purchase your own machines, but they tend to be pricy and require operating room.
